Two Year eScience Degree Combinations

Students can choose the following new and innovative professional degree combinations that can be completed within two years of full time study. These are the GradDipIT / MIT, the Masters of Engineering / MIT and the Masters of Information Systems Studies / MIT. The latter two combinations also apply for the GradDipIT (the GradDipIT may be done before or after the respective one year Master course). Unless otherwise noted, studies may be commenced in February or July.

Graduate Diploma of IT (eScience) / Master of IT (eScience)

The Graduate Diploma in IT (eScience) is a one-year full-time-equivalent program. Students enrolled in this degree must complete 48 units of the course in order to graduate from this program. If they successfully complete these units with a Distinction average mark (70%) or better, then they are eligible to automatically articulate to the Master of Information Technology (eScience) at ANU. The latter program will require a further 48 units of courses (or one further year of full-time study) to be completed. Admission requirements are as for the Graduate Diploma.

Master of Information Systems Studies / Master of IT (eScience)

Admission requirements: are as for the MIT. Students not meeting these requirements but with a three year degree in science, engineering or a related technical area (including IT) with a 65% or better average may be eligible but will be required to enrol in the MISS first and complete the degree with a 70% or better average. As the MISS does not assume a backgroound in IS, this combination may not be useful for students already with a strong IS background. Students should indicate in the program preference box on their application form that they wish to seek admission to the joint degree option.

Program Structure: One enrolment sequence is the MISS followed by the MIT. In the MISS, selecting an elective from a relevant 6000-level COMP course is encouraged. Upon enrolment in the MIT, status will be given for COMP6311 Software Analysis and Design, COMP6704 Project Management and 12 units of Group D options.
For the enrolment sequence of the MIT followed by the MISS, MIT students should take two MISS courses (excluding INFS8007 and BUSN8024) for their Group D options. Provided that these courses are both taken in the final semester of the MIT, it will then be possible to complete the MISS in the following semester.

Master of Engineering / Master of IT (eScience)

Admission requirements: the requirements for both the MIT and the ME must be met, which normally includes a four-year undergraduate science, engineering or related technical degree (including IT) with a standard equivalent to an Australian distinction (70%) average. Students without the required computing background for the MIT may enrol in the ME/GradDipIT (2 years) or ME/GradDipIT/MIT (approximately 2.5 years). Students with a three year degree but otherwise meeting the ME requirements may be eligible but will be required to enrol in the MIT first. Students should indicate in the program preference box on their application form that they wish to seek admission to the joint degree option.

Students completing the single degree Master of Engineering or Master of Information Technology (eScience) may also take advantage of this unique joint program and should consult the relevant program convenor regarding admission.

Program Structure: The normal enrolment sequence will be the Master of Engineering, with two Group C Free Electives being taken from MIT (eScience) courses. It is recommended that these are taken from the MIT Group A or B courses (as this will allow maximum flexibility for course selection during the MIT). The ME is then followed by the Master of Information Technology (eScience) over the next two semesters, with status also being given for 12 units of MIT Group D options.

Students considering doing the MIT first must chose, for their MIT Group D options, two courses from among the ME Group A compulsory courses. If a full-time student begins the MIT in an odd semester, they can complete the combined MIT/BE by the even semester of the next year if they take these ME Group A compulsory courses in an odd semester (of the first or second year). In the even semester of the second year, the student enrolls in and completes the BE by taking the remaining two courses from the ME Group A and two courses from ME Group B. The converse applies if the student begins the MIT in an even semester.

Such students are advised to seek the advice of the MIT program convenor as early as possible in their degree if contemplating this combination.
