COMP1710 : Laboratory 5 : Images and plan Video

Objectives

In this lab generate an image gallery, and start planning your video. (Hint: the next lab will be about putting video on the web, and your assignment will include a video.)

Tasks

Task 1: Review Images and Video

Make sure you have read all the online lecture notes, and especially, about Images, and about Video. The notes for the guest lecture on "visual glue of editing" will be up soon - the audio is up on webCT.

Task 2: Create a photo gallery with Galerie or JAlbum

Prepare a set  of images. Put them into a directory on the desktop. There may be some issue in working with files over the network. That is why you have to copy the data on the desktop. At the end, remember to copy your produced work back into your network directory (u1234567 etc) otherwise you will lose it when logging off.

You don't need to work with iPhoto to use Galerie, but it is designed to work in good harmony with iPhoto :

Feel free to work the way you want (you may enter the comments from within Galerie too, and use the name of the files as the title), but your Xanga page should include a gallery of  photographs with with some consistent look.

You may want to use another photo gallery generator. A powerful multiplateform one is for instance JAlbum: http://jalbum.net/

Task 3: Plan your video

This task is to plan the video you intend to shoot. In the next lab after the break, you will edit and publish a rough draft of your video (and you assignment will include a final version of your video with your comments on your video and on the errors you made and how you overcame them). In this lab, you will do the first plan of your video (and it may end up different but you need to have an initial plan).

In this lab, you will do a story-board for the video. A storyboard is like a comic or sequence of images which represent what your video will contain with some text talking about the images. I suggest a table with a border is a good way to put this up on your Xanga site. In each 'box', you could put a verbal description of the scene (a textual 'comic' in effect). If you already have some images which will be useful, then you could add these.

During the lab, you will clearly only have a little time to think about this so its enough to have some clear plan up on Xanga. It will be worth your while thinking about this further, so if you do more thinking on this during the week, do add it. E.g. you could sketch out a comic style storyboard and scan it in later etc.

Another HINT: record some video during the break which will form the basis of your video. During this lab you have to come up with an idea (which you can change later). So, you will be able to record some appropriate video content over the break.

Task 4: Update your learning journal/events

This task is most easily done in parallel with the other tasks.

Your learning journal talks about your thoughts about what you've learnt.

Please don't forget to create an event for today's lab which gives a brief description of what you've done.
